I'm a writer, storyteller, conversational designer and creative producer based in Burbank, CA.
Everything has a story. From the crumpled plastic cup in the gutter, to the forest ranger perched high in a fire lookout tower, to the multimillionaire staring at himself in the mirror, there is a story at the heart of everything and everyone. Finding that story and making it engaging in a short or long format, comedy piece, theme park attraction or television show, and making it meaningful and easy for people to connect with – that’s what lies at the heart of my own 30+ year story as a writer.
Thank you for allowing me to share some of my story and selected work with you.
OVERVIEW
COMEDY BACKGROUND
I began my career writing jokes and material for standup comedians and other celebrities and I have always tried (when appropriate) to infuse a sense of humor and fun into my writing. I admire and appreciate anyone's well-written joke or sketch, and hearing an audience laugh and enjoy my material has always brought me great joy.
HEARING THE VOICE
The benefit of having written for so many different age groups during my career is that I am quick to pick up the specific voice of a target audience.
CHARACTERS, CHARACTERS,
CHARACTERS
From my Walt Disney Imagineering Theme Park work to original animations, network specials -- and even hosted and live material -- every piece of writing I've ever done needs a great character to speak the words that tell their story, and the story of the world in which they exist. Life experience -- and the very colorful characters I've met along the way -- has given me so much to draw upon.
ANCORA IMPARO
It's Latin for "I am still learning," and it's a motto I live by.
I have spent my entire career learning the ins and outs of writing for new industries and formats, and I still enjoy that very much.

WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING
Walt Disney Imagineers design, write, and build all theme park rides and attractions. I have been very fortunate to have worked with these fine folks for years because they are some of the most creative and fun people I've ever met.

D309 AI Character for Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Interactive Experience
I worked with the team as a conversational designer to help write over 10,000 lines of interractive multi-level discourse for the starcruiser's logistic droid D309, and helped develop her centuries-old story and guest-relatable personality.

Monsters Inc Laugh Floor
I researched the film Monsters Inc. and helped develop new characters and standup comedy routines for the revamp of this audience participation live comedy show.

Awesome Planet Film at Epcot's Land Pavilion
For this environmental awareness Epcot film, I wrote the story overlay and v/o script for host Ty Burrell ("Modern Family") to narrate as a Galatic Real Estate professional showing off planet Earth as one of his greatest offerings.

Janky Bot
Early AI Playtest
As an early predecesor to AI droid characters, Janky Bot was an RC robot used around the park to gauge guest response to interractive robotic characters. My role was to Blue Sky potential characters and scenarios for park playtests.
ROBOT FUNCTIONS, PERSONALITIES and EMOTIONS: AN EXPLORATION QUESTION: When the robots first role out, how “robotic” versus “emotional” are these guys? In other words, do they come out happily humming a tune, bobbing their heads, etc.? Or are they more robotic at first, only becoming more “humanly” emotive once something distracts

STAR TOURS: The Adventure Continues
During the Star Tours rehab, I was brought in to help the team develop the personality and story of G2-9T, the security droid who checks passenger luggage for smuggled droids. I also wrote and polished many of his comedic bits based on the items seen in the luggage.

Sustainability and Design
R&D asked me to write a fun script to replace the previously straight-forward presentation about sustainability in theme park construction and infrastructure systems, and the forms required for updating the progress of each team.
Here is the final script.
(Please excuse the redactions).
“SUSTAINABILITY AND DESIGN Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love Filling Out Forms” (NOTE: Done in the style of a 1960’s educational film with muted color, affected sound, etc.) FADE IN: MUSIC: Typical 1960’s educational film music. Happy, bouncy, optimistic. Title Card#1: DUNDEED EDUCATIONAL FILMS presents Title Card#2: SUSTAINABILITY and DESIGN Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Filling Out Forms Title Card#3: A Dr. Daley Dundeed PRODUCTION FADE OUT: FADE IN: EXT. PREHISTORIC LANDSCAPE - DAY (ANIMATION) MUSIC: HAPPY, LIGHT 1960’S EDU FILM We see “GRONK,” an animated caveman standing in an open prehistoric landscape. He wears a FUR, holds a CLUB, and stares blankly into the camera at us. Every once in a while, he might scratch himself or ignore a buzzing fly. In the distant background, we see a VOLCANO -- a wisp of smoke coming from the top. A NARRATOR begins. His voice is happy and informative, a typical 1960’s educational film narrator. NARRATOR (V.O.) Meet Gronk. He’s a simple caveman living in simple caveman times. Say “hello,” Gronk. GRONK (emotionless) Gronk. NARRATOR (V.O.) Yes, our friend Gronk lives at a time when the human population is still quite low, and natural resources are plentiful. The view moves to show a RIVER, TREES, THE SKY as mentioned. NARRATOR (V.O.) There’s lots of fresh water to drink... an abundance of trees... and plenty of clean air to breath. No, Gronk needn’t worry his lumpy little head about subjects like “Sustainability.” (beat) But... DISSOLVE TO: TITLE CARD: (White letters on black): What is Sustainability? NARRATOR (V.O.) ...what is sustainability? DISSOLVE TO: INT. A STUDY - DAY (ANIMATION - STYLIZED FOR ON CAM EXPERTS) It is the study/library of Dr. Daley Dundeed, a friendly, Ben Schwegler professorial type. He sits in padded chair next to a floor lamp. Shelves of books are behind him. He holds a PIPE in his hand. DR. DUNDEED Hello, I’m Dr. Daley Dundeed of the “Daley Dundeed Foundation for Good Deeds... (big smile) ...Done Daily.” (beat, serious) Yes, “Sustainability” is an important subject worthy of discussion. CUT TO: EXT. GRONK SCENE - CONTINUOUS (ANIMATED) Gronk continues to stare at the camera/us. DR. DUNDEED (V.O.) Ever since the dawn of man, humans have been consumers of natural resources rather than replenishers. As Dundeed mentions, we see what he’s describing pop up all around Gronk, his world overtaken by smoking factories, cars, freeways, cities -- trees and water disappear, etc. DR. DUNDEED (V.O.) Sure, factories, cities, the automobile and other modern conveniences have improved our lives in countless ways, but they’ve come at a cost to our environment, our atmosphere, our climate, and our limited natural resources. Gronk has been looking around at how his world has changed. He turns back to us. GRONK (sadly) Gronk. CUT TO: INT. OFFICE - CONTINUOUS (ANIMATION - STYLIZED FOR ON CAM EXPERTS) The camera is little tighter on Dundeed. DR. DUNDEED Sustainability means strategically developing and designing those and other modern conveniences so they have less of an impact on planet earth -- because -- we only have one planet on which to live. (beat) Well, two if you count Mars. But that’s already full of little green men. (beat) Thank you. CUT TO: TITLE CARD: What Can Your Business Do? NARRATOR (V.O.) So... What Can YOUR business do to be more sustainable? INSERT IMAGE OF WALT DISNEY COMPANY THROWBACK LOGO. NARRATOR (V.O.) Fortunately, your business is already making great strides! INSERT IMAGES OR FOOTAGE OF SHANGHAI DISNEY RESORT NARRATOR (V.O.) Like at your Shanghai Disney Resort! It was designed with the latest technologies to increase overall energy efficiency by three times! And it doesn’t take much energy to say Hao ji le! (NOTE: pronounce how gee luh -- Mandarin for “excellent”) INSERT SUBTITLE as Narrator says Hao Ji Le that reads “Excellent!” INSERT IMAGES OR FOOTAGE OF WALT DISNEY WORLD AND THE CENTRAL FLORIDA ENERGY GARDEN. NARRATOR (V.O.) In Florida, your Walt Disney World Resort was the first central Florida business to sign on to an anaerobic digestion facility that turns organic waste, such as food scraps, into natural biogas! Way to go scrap munchers! INSERT IMAGES OR FOOTAGE OF PARK RECYCLING BINS, SPRINKLERS NARRATOR (V.O.) And, of course, your efforts in the areas of recycling and water reclamation will help you continue on your path to zero greenhouse emissions, zero waste to landfills, and better potable water conservation. (beat) But... DISSOLVE TO: TITLE CARD: What else can be done? NARRATOR (V.O.) ...what else can you do when designing and updating your projects? DISSOLVE TO: INSERT FOOTAGE - DISNEY TEAM MEETING NARRATOR (V.O.) Continue to think “green!” Spend the time with your team creatively discussing and researching ways to replace older practices with those driven by sustainable design, construction and operational solutions! INSERT SPECIFIC FOOTAGE OF EACH AS MENTIONED. NARRATOR (V.O.) Like, using recycled and rapidly-renewable construction materials... Natural and energy efficient lighting... Provide sensor points and dashboards for operations teams to see and manage their utility consumption... use drought resistent plants that require less irrigation... and always keep a watchful eye as new and improved sustainable technologies become available. (beat) Look, we’re not trying to beat a dead horse... but... DISSOLVE TO: TITLE CARD: How do you beat a dead horse? NARRATOR (V.O.) ...how do you beat a dead -- VISUAL AND SOUND EFFECT: THE SOUND PROJECTOR FLUTTER AND A “SPLICE” GOES BY. DIFFERENT KIND OF TITLE CARD APPEARS. “SCENE OMITTED” VISUAL AND SOUND EFFECT: THE SOUND PROJECTOR FLUTTER AND A “SPLICE” GOES BY. CUT TO: INT. OFFICE -- DAY (ANIMATION - STYLIZED FOR ON CAM EXPERTS) A tight shot on the very SERIOUS FACE of a very serious MAN. MAN What you’ve just seen was only a dramatization, but the issue of sustainability is very real. If you and your team wish to help save us, our planet, and every living inhabitant, perhaps the most important thing... CUT TO: INT. OFFICE - CONTINUOUS A wider shot revealing the man is at a very neat DESK with an “In Box” and an “Out Box”. On the wall hangs a sign that reads “Department of Forms.” MAN ...is filling out your forms -- such as the EAS, or Environmental Assessment Statement. A FORM suddenly “crawls” across the desk like an inchworm. The man references it without diverting his eyes from the camera. MAN Yes, it’s a “living” form, and meant to be updated as your project progresses through its various phases. AS THE FORM EXITS FRAME... SFX: CAT SCREAM Unwavering, the man continues. (NOTE: SHORT ADDITIONAL EAS INFO TBD TO BE FILLED IN). CUT TO: INT. OFFICE - CONTINUOUS Now a medium shot to include the man and his in-box. MAN Never forget that you, the creative do-gooders of today, hold in your very hand the key to all our planet’s sustainability solutions. (beat) So say yes to your E-A-S. (pointing to inbox, whispering) It goes here. CUT TO: INSERT PHOTO OF PLANET EARTH (OR OLD SPINNING ANIMATED EARTH) NARRATOR (V.O.) Yessiree, a sustainable planet is a happy planet just brimming with happy humans! And happy humans are happy guests! CUT TO: EXT. A DISNEYLAND WATER FOUNTAIN - DAY (ANIMATION) A clean-cut Mom, Dad, 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter stand at a WATER FOUNTAIN. The daughter finishes drinking and looks at her family. LITTLE GIRL (excited) Wow, this potable tap water sure tastes great! In a move, they all turn to the camera, smile, and shoot a big thumbs up. SFX: DING! CUT TO: INT. ATTRACTION TBD -- LATER (ANIMATION) The same family is walking by some lighting. The daughter points. LITTLE GIRL (excited) Wow, those LED’s sure are energy efficient! In a move, they all turn to the camera, smile, and shoot a big thumbs up. SFX: DING! CUT TO: INT. A DISNEYLAND STORE -- LATER (ANIMATION) The same family. The daughter points to a vent. LITTLE GIRL (excited) Wow, the ventilation system sure seems optimized for energy use, air quality and human comfort! MOM/DAD/SON (together) It sure is! In a move, they all turn to the camera, smile, and shoot a big thumbs up. SFX: DING! NARRATOR (V.O.) That’s right, most of today’s guests really do care about these things... unless they’re cold and heartless. CUT TO: EXT. PREHISTORIC TIMES - DAY (ANIMATION) We see Gronk. His landscape has returned to the first prehistoric scene we saw. NARRATOR (V.O.) And so we leave Gronk, our simple caveman living in his simple caveman times. (to Gronk) But you know Gronk -- you too can start your own program of sustainability. GRONK (questioning tone) Gronk? NARRATOR (V.O.) That’s right! If you start today by conserving your natural resources, if you start thinking green now, I bet your future will be even brighter. Gronk’s expression slowly changes, a big SMILE forming on his face for perhaps the first time ever. Suddenly, the volcano in the background ERUPTS in a fiery blast. Gronk’s smile fades to the same look as before. NARRATOR (V.O.) Uh, sorry Gronk. CUT TO: MUSIC -- HAPPY AS BEFORE TITLE CARD: THE END A Dundeed Educational Film FADE TO BLACK

Hawaiian Bobblehead Guides
As part of a Blue Sky project team, I brainstormed, researched and wrote several location specific activities for family health and wellness immersive experiences.
(Please excuse the redactions).
I wrote new v/o for Epcot's updated circlevision Canada film for hosts Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy ("Schitt's Creek","Waiting For Guffman," "SCTV") striking the careful balance of just the right amount of humor.
A concept for hosting guests in various locations, I wrote this comedic script utilizing AR technology to showcase potential in-car hosts while driving around the island of O'ahu.

I helped develop the look and feel of this Award Winning DVD series and, working with curriculum experts, wrote all 12 episodes to illustrate how Disney Imagineers utilize science when designing theme park attractions.
Episodes: Levers & Pulleys, Trajectory, Gravity, Energy, Designs & Models, Fluids, Animal Adaptations, Magnetism, Newton's Laws of Motion, Friction, Biodiversity, Electricity
The clip below is a shortened promotional version of the original 25 minute episode.

Disney's HISTORY Connections

THE GETTY VILLA MUSEUM

Getty Villa LARP
Intro to Experience Concept Script
I worked with a team of museum directors, currators, and researchers to ideate a LARP (Live Action Role Play) experience for teens to better understand the interpersonal and heirarchical relationships of the families and citizens of the Villa dei Papiri on the day of Pompeii's Mt. Vesuvius eruption.
I wrote this script as a comedic counterbalance to the expected austere museum experience that many teens believe exists at all museums.

For this first-ever winter edition of Big Brother, I was brought in to write all of Julie Chen Moonves' on-camera host material for each LIVE telecast. This included scripting on-the-spot story and segment updates written during live commercials, and getting these changes approved (and to the teleprompter operator) before the end of the commercial break.

Hercules:

For this network television special that aired in conjunction with the release of Disney's 35th animated feature film "Hercules," I wrote narrative and comedic wraparounds that told the story of two two bumbling archeologist searching historic Greek sites for the secret of Hercules lost treasure.
The special starred Matt Frewer ("Max Headroom"), Bobcat Goldthwait (Comedy and movies), musical performer Michael Bolton and Broadway's Susan Egan.

Short Story Contest Winner
(Know any doorknobs?)
My brother once humorously quipped that I could probably talk to a doorknob for an hour. I replied that if the doorknob had a great story, I certainly could.
I like people and always have. Every person I'm lucky enough to meet has so much to share, so many different life stories and unique perspectives.
Getting in to a long conversation with a stranger and connecting with that person on some level brings me great happiness.
I suppose if you're in a business long enough, people start asking you for advice. I've had the pleasure of mentoring many just starting out in the business.
Several years ago I also had the opportunity to teach a class on "Writing For Reality TV," a two-day event at a performing arts festival in Dennison, Iowa that focused on structuring story, and how the writer is still very important to the process.
(BTW, If you've never been to Iowa, you should visit. It's beautiful!)
I enjoy writing short stories and believe they are a nice bite-sized way to get people (both young and old) interested in reading and writing.
I've only entered one short story contest in my life, and the entire story needed to be 101 words or less. Happily, my "The Clone" won first place.
